Elisa-Maude McConnell holds a small, malnourished baby boy whose severely cleft lip and palate prevented him from suckling properly. A few months after his surgery at the Benjamin Bloom Children’s Hospital in San Salvador he had gained weight and was thriving.

Elisa-Maude McConnell is a speech-language pathologist at the Centre hospitalier de l’Université Laval (CHUL) in Quebec City. In mid-January, she volunteered to go on a mission with Global Smile Foundation (GSF) in San Salvador, the capital city of El Salvador, a small Central American country.
