Jesus Christ Superstar coming soon to a church near you!

With just over a week before the Quebec Art Company (QAC)’s latest production hits the stage, the cast and crew of the rock-opera Jesus Christ Superstar were treated to something very special last Thursday.
Director Peter Black, with help from the team at Chalmers-Wesley United Church, opened the doors to the 165-year-old landmark to allow the troupe an opportunity stand on stage and imagine breathing life into their characters while putting on one of the biggest productions in the Quebec Art Company’s history.

Accompanied by a live band, the 30-plus singers, actors, dancers and technicians will be turning this breathtaking house of worship into a house of music, choreography and story-telling from April 12 to 14 and April 19 to 21.

Black, who is directing his first musical, has been working on putting this project together for almost two years. However, a project of this magnitude isn’t brought to fruition by one fearless and dedicated leader alone. He is surrounded by enthusiastic and supportive people like Brigitte Méthot and Zita Bombardier, who are lending their talents as the choreographers, Bobby Fielding as music director and Hugh Glassco, who tirelessly (and seemingly effortlessly) plays an electronic keyboard during rehearsals to give the actors a taste of what it will sound like when the live band and the cast join forces next week.

Support isn’t just being provided from the QAC and production team. Voice of English-speaking Québec will be providing FREE bus transportation to Quebec City from Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier and Shannon for the Thursday, April 19, performance. The bus will leave the Shannon Community Centre (75 Gosford Road) at 6:45 p.m. and the Valcartier Community Centre (1743 boulevard Valcartier) at 7 p.m. Return transportation will leave Chalmers-Wesley Church at approximately 10 p.m. RSVP by Friday, April 13 (and indicate at which location you will be picked up) to [email protected] or 418-683-2366 ext. 221. A minimum of 10 people is required.

There has been a lot of buzz and anticipation around this production. How is Black feeling with the opening performance only a few days away? Well, “I’m now sleeping at nights,” he says with a cautiously optimistic smile.

Tickets are available by reserving online at quebecartcompany.com or at the door, although reservations are highly recommended as some nights are almost sold out.
