Maria-Teresa Warnke (née Iwaszkiewicz) died peacefully at Saint Brigid’s Home, in Quebec City, on January 21, 2018, at age 91. She was the wife of the late Jan Warnke and the daughter of the late Zofia Lezanska and the late Jan Iwaszkiewicz.

Maria leaves behind a rich history, a part of which is documented in her mémoire, Dzidzia, which she wrote in Quebec City. Born in

Bogdanowo, Poland, in 1926, she immigrated to Canada in 1948 after the Second World War. She spent the last five years of her long life in Quebec City. For more than 60 years, Maria lived in Sarnia, Ontario, where she built a new life, founded a family and, with her husband, participated in the development of the Polish community.

She leaves to mourn her son Jan Warneke, her daughter-in-law Micheline St-Pierre, her granddaughter Arielle Warnke St-Pierre and her husband Alan Lake, as well as her great-granddaughter Lou Warnke Lake, who she had the happiness of knowing. She will be equally missed by other relatives: Karen Jaeger, Stacey Ivers, Iris Ivers, Barbara Salva and Monica Salva, her godson Carl Szaefer, her friend Joanna Kazanecki who was so close to her heart, as well as many other friends who were so dear to her.

To honour her last wishes, a Liturgy of the Word will be celebrated at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Sarnia, Ontario, on April 11, 2018. Her ashes will be interred in Our Lady Of Mercy Cemetery.

The family wishes to warmly thank the staff of the Hostellerie du Parc des Braves, the members of the care team at Hôpital du Saint-Sacrement, the staff at Saint Brigid’s Home, particularly Dr. Marie-Ève Martineau for her support and empathetic ear.
