Members of Élément 8, an octet of cello players, gave a mini-concert at the Pub Galway during a press conference.

The Société de développement commercial du quartier Montcalm (SDC) – Quartier des Arts, the Orchestre Symphonique de Québec (OSQ) and the Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec (MNBAQ) announced a new sound installation (music box) on one of the giant lamps on Avenue Cartier on Feb. 26.

Five of the 34 new lampshades that were installed on Avenue Cartier last November already have music boxes, which play carefully selected musical extracts recorded by the OSQ. The new one is located on the lamp between Rue Fraser and Rue Aberdeen, near the Pub Galway, where the press conference for the announcement was held last week.

To hear the music, just stand on a designated spot under the lamp, wait a few seconds and the recording will begin to play. The new selection is from Mouvement symphonique I by Quebec composer Roger Matton. The enormous lampshade is decorated with a reproduction of a work by Quebec artist Pierre Ayot, entitled Serge Tousignant.

Fabien Gabel, music director of the OSQ, introduced his new assistant director-in-residence Thomas Le Duc-Moreau, 23, who will be completing his master’s in orchestra direction with maestro Jacques Lacombe at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal in May 2018. During his two-year contract, Le Duc-Moreau will have the opportunity to direct the OSQ during the Concerts famille series, Matinées symphoniques and regional tours. He replaces former director-in-residence Nicholas Ellis.

Gabel also presented the OSQ’s first ensemble-in-residence, Élément 8 – an octet of cellists composed of Jean-Christophe Guelpa, Suzanne Villeneuve, Blair Lofgren, Alejandro Calzadilla, Ryan Molzan, Julie Herish, Marie Bergeron and Tomohisa Toriumi. The ensemble treated those gathered at the Pub Galway to an arrangement of Astor Piazolla’s Fuga Y Misterio.
