Dr. Frederick Banting, the discoverer of insulin, was featured on the cover of the Aug. 27, 1923 edition of TIME: The Weekly News-Magazine.

In 1889, German medical researchers determined that something in the pancreas was involved in the onset of diabetes mellitus (commonly referred to as Type 1 diabetes). It was not until the summer of 1921 that Dr. Frederick Banting at the University of Toronto suggested a new line of investigation.
