When you celebrate a birthday as historic as the one we have coming soon, it's no surprise that the festivities take on a life of their own. The anniversary date (June 21), a notable date in its own right, has been transformed into a week of events. Here is a run-down of what we have planned. We look forward to seeing you all there!

Anniversary week edition still has room for you!

Wednesday, June 18, 2014

The 250th anniversary commemorative edition has gone to press. If you missed the chance to include a congratulatory note or ad, there is still time to remedy that. The anniversary week edition will feature bonus material not included in the commemorative edition, and we still have room for you. The deadline for ads is Friday, June 13th. Contact us at [email protected] or call (418) 650-1764.

Anniversary week media coverage

Media outlets in Quebec City and beyond will be profiling the QCT, past and present contributors and journalists, and our photo archives. If you know of a media outlet that might be interested in the story of North America’s oldest newspaper, feel free to put them in touch with us!

Historical plaque unveiling

Monday, June 16, 2014, at City Hall; by invitation from the city

Mayor Labeaume will unveil a plaque to be placed on the QCT’s former building at the corner of Buade and Rue du Trésor. The bilingual plaque emphasizes the significance of that building, dubbed by many at the time of its construction as the “Palais de la presse.”

Connecting through Culture: 250 Years of Chronicling the Community

Wednesday, June 18 at 7:30 p.m.

Morrin Centre; free admission. Call the Morrin Centre at 418 694-9147 to reserve.

Historian Charles André Nadeau will delight us with the interesting and amusing events by which The Quebec Gazette – La Gazette de Québec, founded in 1764, became the Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph. The Morrin Centre invites you to join them in celebrating this pillar of the city’s Anglophone community and discover its ties with illustrious characters such as Benjamin Franklin, Benedict Arnold, former Common Gaol inmate Philippe Aubert de Gaspé, and the founder of the Lit & His, Lord Dalhousie.

Special edition launch and historical plaque celebration

Friday, June 20 at the Morrin Centre; by invitation only

The special edition will be mailed out to current subscribers as an insert in the June 25th edition, following the launch on the 20th. Please feel free to contact us at [email protected] or  call (418) 650-1764 to order extra copies.

Community Picnic to celebrate the 250th anniversary

Saturday, June 21 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (rain or shine)

Holland Elementary School; free - just bring your picnic lunch and gear!

A birthday wouldn’t be a party without friends, which is why we were determined to celebrate the anniversary on the anniversary date – June 21st. Hosting the community picnic on a Saturday, at a local school, was central to ensuring the whole community could join. And when you hear the schedule of events for the day, we’re confident you’ll mark your calendars and come celebrate with us. From bagpipes and the Blair Family Musicians, a story time (QCRC) and an interactive trivia game, to lots of family-friendly games organized by VEQ’s Be Active Quebec, QCT readers of all ages are in for a good time. Jeffrey Hale Community Services staff and volunteers will help us make sure you feel very welcome, and of course, there will cake, refreshments, QCT “swag” and more.
