The Empress of Ireland sank near Rimouski in the St. Lawrence River, following a collision with a Norwegian coal ship on May 29, 1914. Of the 1,477 people on board, 1,012 died, making it the worst peacetime marine disaster in Canadian history.

There was a time when everything that crossed the ocean moved by ship, including whole families.
