In the Shadow of a Tree, one of Helen McNicoll’s final canvases before her death in 1915, is her most straightforward depiction of a caregiving relationship. The dappled shadows cast by a tree envelop the umbrella, pram, woman and baby, calling attention to what is revealed by light or concealed in the shadows.
