Note from Lorie: After a 35-year career in the Royal Navy, Edward David Ashe (1814-1895) served as president of the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec. Throughout his life, he researched, wrote and presented on topics such as water power in Quebec, lifeboat design, sunspots and the use of the electric telegraph to determine longitude. As director of the Observatory of Quebec, Ashe was considered to be Canada’s first astrophysicist. (Source – Dictionary of Canadian Biography)
