The mighty (annoying) mosquito has shaped history

By transmitting diseases, mosquitoes cause the deaths of more people than any other organism: over 700,000 each year, and as many as half of the people who have ever lived.

Said a friend as we observed hundreds of bloodthirsty mosquitoes pressing themselves against the screen on the porch of his country house: “Looks like the night of the living dead.” What’s worse, this entomological horror show was last week, mid-August, when well-behaved mosquitoes should have had the decency to die off weeks ago.
