First prize was awarded to Jay Ouellet for the Best Sports Photo, of Mathieu Betts (right) as he sacked Montreal’s quarterback Antoine Morand for the fourth time during the 18-15 win over the Carabins to become RSEQ’s all-time sack leader.

Three Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph journalists took home four certificates of excellence from the 39th annual Better Newspapers Competition held by the Quebec Community Newspaper Association (QCNA).

Photographer Jay Ouellet took first place in the Best Sports Photo category for his shot of Université Laval’s football player Mathieu Betts sacking Université de Montréal’s quarterback Antoine Morand for the fourth time during a winning game in October 2018. The judge, Ted McFadden of Metroland Media in Newmarket, Ont., said, “This shot captures ‘the moment!’ The expressions, the loose ball and the impact all combine to make this the top choice.”

Photographer and journalist Cassandra Kerwin, competing in the same category, was awarded third place with her photo of enthusiastic children skiing at the First Mont-Sainte-Anne Loppet that appeared in the April 4, 2018, edition. There were 17 entries in this particular category.

QCT journalist Peter Black brought home two prizes! He was awarded second place in the Best Column Writing category (based on four of his weekly submissions), and third prize for the Best News Photo, featuring Quebec City councillor Jean Rousseau examining the crumbling entrance to Maison Pollack on Grande Allée that appeared in the Oct. 3, 2018, edition.

Congratulations to our prize winners and to all QCT journalists, photographers, copy editors and revisers who work hard every week to bring our readers the best possible articles and images as they chronicle our community.
