First soldiers arrive home – greeted at Base Valcartier

Tuesday night saw the return of some 40 soldiers to Base Valcartier, and another 60 headed for Montreal, Trenton, Ontario, and destinations farther west, after some six months of duty in Afghanistan. They left last June.

Canadian Rangers travel to share in celebrating 400 years of history

With cheery faces, the Canadian Rangers motored their way from CFB Valcartier to Quebec City Hall for an official greeting.

Some 40 Rangers from 23 Northern communities, members of the 2nd Patrol Group, made a trek to Quebec City by snowmobile in support of its 400th anniversary.

There will be strange happenings in the village of Saint-Gabriel-de-Valcartier. On February 10, shortly before 2 p.m. a crowd will gather to decide the fate of one of its own. Will it be municipal councillor Thomas Lavallee, school principal André Desgagné, or teacher Cedric Ferland?

Echo[e]s will speak to the English-speaking communities of past and present

Gisèle Bouchard is collecting photos and video that depict life as an English-speaker in Quebec City over the past century. This is the final step in her information gathering for Echo[e]s, the Literary and Historical Society of Quebec’s oral history project.

Echo[e]s is part of the LHSQ’s 400th anniversary program, Voices from the Crossroads.

Carless in the suburbs

Who says that no one walks to the corner store for milk anymore? Just because you live in the suburbs doesn’t mean you’re stuck behind the wheel of a car.

A recent Canadian study said that folks who live outside of the city centre rely on their cars more. Perhaps this is the case for some people. But there are exceptions.

Haller to host wordcraft workshops at Morrin Centre

Poet, singer/songwriter Adrian Haller will host a four-session series on writing, Word/Craft: An Introduction to Poetry Writing and Practice, to be held on Sundays once a month from February to May at Morrin Centre. The workshops are being held in conjunction with the Quebec Writers’ Federation.

Rebels take home trophy from 95th Quebec International Bonspiel

Ontario’s Rebels were flattered by the standing ovation when they were called to accept the Quebec International Bonspiel’s top trophy.

The bonspielers celebrated the 95th edition of the weeklong event, hosted at the Château Frontenac.

The Rebels, now combined with team La Terrace, is a bit of a father-and-son tradition.
