Twelve-year-old Mégane Ouellet, daughter of Tommy Ouellet and Marie Blais, the hosts of the event, drove her horse Précieuse, a 10-year-old quarter-horse. Her father helps balance and navigate the back end of the sleigh around obstacles such as the orange cone with a ball sitting on top.

Feb. 8 was marked on the calendar of many horse lovers, derby fans and racers. However, with the storm that hit Quebec the day before, leaving 35 to 40 centimetres of snow on the ground, it was impossible for Tommy Ouellet and Marie Blais to host the Val-Bélair Derby as planned.
