As soon as they stepped into the theatre at CFB Valcartier, audience members knew they were in for a magical afternoon of Christmas music. The stage was decorated with red poinsettias and glowing stars. The theatre was full of children talking excitedly to their parents and each other. Babies nestled in their parents’ arms as everyone waited for the music to begin.

The English-speaking community in the Magdalen Islands, an archipelago in the Gulf of St. Lawrence off the coast of the Gaspé Peninsula, was built up through a succession of accidents of history. “Many of us are the descendants of shipwreck survivors or fishermen,” says islander Helena Burke.

Oh, Christmas trees!

“Oh, Christmas tree, O Christmas tree, how lovely are thy branches.” This friendly group of Christmas trees is decorated to resemble a choir singing carols, directed by the larger tree on the left. Complete with hats, mittens, music scores, a music stand and baton, this whimsical forest of note welcomes residents and visitors to a Sainte-Foy apartment building.
