It isn’t every Saturday storytime that the parents are as interested in the special guest as their kids. Canadian astronaut candidate James Veilleux gave the large group of parents and children gathered in the Morrin Centre main library some insider information about the intensive and demanding process of being selected to be sent into space.

English-speaking community will not abandon school boards

Quebec’s English-speaking community has absolutely no intention of heeding Premier François Legault’s advice that we abandon any plans to challenge the Coalition Avenir Québec government’s scheme to abolish school boards and replace them with service centres.

It’s time for the annual “Luc”-ky sports awards

There are no plaques, trophies or certificates that come with the “Luc”-ky awards but, in my opinion, this is a time to reflect on the past year in local sports and to recognize the male and female athletes I consider to be outstanding.

Team of the Year
In 2017, the award went to the St. Patrick’s High School women’s senior rugby team.

MNBAQ’s Murmures encourages budding young architects

The revamped family gallery in the central pavilion of the Musée national des Beaux-Arts du Québec (MNBAQ) opened on Dec. 12, to the delight of several children and grandchildren of museum employees who were invited to “test drive” the new setup.  

Eileen Reid Marcil honoured by Irish Heritage Quebec

Following the annual meeting of Irish Heritage Quebec in McMahon Hall of St. Patrick’s Church on Dec. 10., president Joe Lonergan and secretary-treasurer John O’Connor honoured Eileen Reid Marcil, who has spent a lifetime recording the history of shipbuilding in Quebec City.

Olympic champion Sandrine Mainville visits Quebec City

Sandrine Mainville, 26, won bronze in freestyle swimming at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games, and has competed in and won many other major championships. Mainville was in Quebec City last week to tell her inspirational story to young fans. She retired from competitive swimming last summer to focus on her studies in law.

Ste. Foy Elementary Christmas Cards and Candy project

A special Christmas tradition has been growing at Ste. Foy Elementary School. The tradition is to create handmade Christmas cards to go with the Christmas Hampers. Cycle three students are lending a hand to help the Community Christmas Hamper Campaign provide some Christmas cheer.
