Overcoming old rivalries first step toward building of a new English high school

Depending on your sensibility, being in a crowd of about one hundred loud (but remarkably well-behaved) grade-school students can be either a terrifying or an edifying experience. What is perhaps even more enlightening is these youngsters were all speaking English; boisterous, French-influenced English.

Quebec High School welcomes hundreds of alumni Back to School for 75th anniversary reunion

The corridors of Quebec High School were filled with hundreds of former students on May 20 as the Quebec High School Alumni Foundation celebrated the school’s 75th anniversary with a Back to School Reunion. 

Rue Patrick-McGrath

This street is named in honour of Patrick McGrath, who was born in Quebec in 1858. He was the son of Timothy McGrath and Mary Ann Walsh from Ireland. In 1881 he worked as a servant for the O’Farrell’s. Three years later he married their daughter Margaret in the parish of Saint-Charles-Borromée in Charlesbourg, near Quebec City.

YWCA work soon to be completed

The restoration and expansion work on the YWCA on Avenue Holland is coming along nicely. More than half of the planned work has been completed, most notably the two additions or enlargements to the building on the front and on the north side. The workmen are just finishing the work on the residential floors.

St. Pat’s Hairspray more than just a musical comedy

With toe-tapping tunes and dazzling dance moves, St. Patrick’s High School’s performance of the political comedy, Hairspray gave the audience a blast from the past on Wednesday, May 17, at Théâtre Périscope.

Breastfeeding Get-together coming soon to the Wellness Centre

A new parenting activity called Breastfeeding Get-together will soon be happening at the Wellness Centre. This venture involves a growing partnership between Jeffery Hale Community Partners and Allaitement Québec, a non-profit community organization founded in 1991 to support women who are breastfeeding or who wish to breastfeed.

The Musée de la Civilisation is Mad About Brains

Welcome to the human brain! The Musée de la Civilisation presents its most recent exhibit: Cerveau à la folie / Mad About Brains, where visitors can learn about neuroscience and psychiatry through interactive displays, objects and photos.

Jeffery Hale-Saint Brigid’s shows appreciation for its many volunteers

On May 18, Jeffery Hale-Saint Brigid’s celebrated the work of its volunteers by hosting a cocktail party in their honour, inviting friends, family and residents at St. Brigid’s Home.

The group honoured Gertie Grogan, one of Saint Brigid's Guild’s founding members, for her decades of dedication.

Recruiting for the Compagnons de la Nouvelle-France

Over the long May weekend, more than 60 history buffs and their families re-enacted the life of soldiers during the Seven Years War, which took place from 1754 to 1763, although the main conflict occurred from 1756 to 1763. The Royal 22e Régiment Museum at the Citadelle de Québec hosted the fifth annual École soldat de la Nouvelle-France / New France Infantry School.
